Chung Eun Kim
Founder / Publisher Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine
Tae Kwon Do Times was founded in 1980 by Chung Eun Kim (1941–2010), a Tae Kwon Do Grand Master, and his
wife, Soja Kim. The Kims retired from their involvement in the magazine in 2005.
Published in the United States, the magazine although devoted to the martial art of Tae Kwon Do, covered other
Korean martial arts systems as well.
Grandmaster Kim was born November 21, 1940, in Massan, Korea. He was united in marriage to Soja Bong on
November 23, 1968, in Korea. He served in the Korean Marine Corps and began his career in martial arts as the
senior instructor in Tae Kwon Do for the marines in the Republic of Korea. In 1971, Grandmaster Kim immigrated to
the United States and started Chung Kim's Black Belt Academy in the Quad Cities, which has expanded to over
seventeen locations and 400 Black Belts. In 1976, Grandmaster Kim founded the American Tae Kwon Do Federation
and served as its President until his death. Grandmaster Kim appeared on the cover of several magazines and in
1980, founded the publication, Tae Kwon Do Times, and served as its Publisher and CEO. Along with his wife,
Grandmaster Kim started the Korean United Methodist Church in his martial arts studio and helped to acquire the
church located at 2200 Central Avenue in Bettendorf.
Grandmaster Chung Eun Kim, 69, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Monday, March 15, 2010, at Trinity Rock Island. Those
left to honor his memory include his loving wife, Soja, Bettendorf; his two daughters, Cindy Y. Kim (Mitchell Sens),
Miami, Fla., and Judy M. Kim (Nicholas Kim), Bolingbrook, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
